After reading the comments, I'm going to stick with the original plan and send over the Timid one.  It's at level 5 now, because I put it through two battles to get pokerus.  Don't worry, they were both speed EV.

We're officially putting together a (Charity?) Tournament at school and I would love to win it, or at least beat my friend who is the favorite to win, at the moment. And he EV trains his team. I have no idea how to take him out but I'm almost positive he'll be using his Volcarona and maybe his Hydreigon and Conkledurr...

Would anyone have any suggestions or advice for me when building a team? I would like to win this tournament and I have no idea how to go about building a competitive team...

a good idea is: reading 5th gen ou analyses on the smogon forums

there isn't much on team building per se but each analysis teaches you how to best use each pokemon as well as good ideas for teammates so you can just work from there

Just so you know, the http://en.pokemon-gl.com/ is now open, so you can sync your games to it. (though I can't until I get a 3DS...) Currently you can play a game called Befriend A Pokemon! and earn one of the Eevee evolutions...well, it only actually lets you get it on May something or another, but you can save the Eevee evolution to your file and get it on that date. Though if your computer lags the game is an annoying *insert long string of cuss words here* to play. Seriously, took me like 18 tries just to complete it because of unfortunate lag and trying to keep the mouse on the game itself so it wouldn't mess up. I managed to get Umbreon on my first try, and I am going with that because I don't ever want to play it again. You can also start collecting Dream World Pokemon and berries, even if you don't/can't sync your game. I got a Poochyena and that's all so far.
