173 – Power Play! GARY! UMBREON! WHOOOOO! *cough* Sorry…..So who would sign a petition to have a Gary and/or Richie series? Starting from the beginning? Come on. I’ll get a Kickstarter together.
- I’m just now realizing that, for however long Johto League Champions will last, we’ll have to see Brock’s shot of him lovingly interacting with his now gone Vulpix over and over in the theme song. Yay.
- Ah it’s so nice to see Gary battle. Ya know, it’s refreshing to see once every 100 episodes….
- It is a bit silly of Gary to refuse to battle Ash simply because he believes he’ll use Pikachu and since he knows all of Pikachu’s patterns and moves, it’d be pointless….Then again, Ash does usually just use Pikachu…..and it’s understandable to think he wouldn’t have caught more Pokemon considering his atrocious catching rate…..What was my point again?
- Hahah, and of course even unveiling all of his current team ends up with Gary still not taking him seriously. It’s a wonderful picture of incompetence with Chikorita snuggling Ash, Totodile dancing around, Cyndaquil wandering around and Noctowl sleeping.
- Will this brief yet embarrassing encounter make Ash acknowledge his poor training abilities and finally do something about it?
No.
- Well, now, maybe I’m not giving Ash enough credit, because he does mention starting a new training program.
Brock: “Well, here’s the Pokemon Center. Why don’t we get dinner at the cafeteria?”
Ash: “This’ll be the first step in my new training program to beat Gary and Umbreon!”
Ash’s Training Program
1 – Eat dinner at the Pokemon Center
2 - ??
??
??
3 – Beat Gary and Umbreon
4 – Profit
- Wow, are you kidding me? Jessie is only now just recognizing Counter as a fantastic move that is very difficult to beat. And it took Meowth getting his Scratch returned to him to see it. That is a new level of obliviously stupid.
- You would figure that after A Better Pill to Swallow that Ash would understand that overeating is a bad thing to do, not something somehow beneficial to him beating Gary. Oh right, Ash learn. I really have to stop believing that will happen.
- Aw Gary’s making dinner for his Umbreon. Aw.
- Today’s Who’s That Pokemon? Note says that Shellder teases its opponents by spitting in their eyes. I’ve never heard of this before, and nothing on Shellder’s Wiki page references such a thing. I even went to the trouble of looking up the basic phrase in Google to see if another Pokemon does this or if there’s more information on Shellder to state such a thing. The only things I found were the WtP notes on two different webpages. Is 4Kids confusing Shellder with something else?
- Team Rocket’s plan this week is not to merely use Wobbuffet’s Counter, but to make a giant Wobbuffet mecha with a super powered Counter machine, one that needs a huge power cord draining all the power in the city to fuel it. I can’t tell if this is smart or stupid, but as this plot went on, I realized it’s stupid for both sides.
It’s a bit smart to make a Counter-making machine (which should be crazy OP and that’s one thing they should actually send Giovanni) but on the other hand, they’ve used the same plan before with the giant mecha Gengar in the Girafarig episode, Psychic Sidekicks. Only they used mirrors there.
And just like in Psychic Sidekicks, this plan has the same glaring and stupid problem. Hey guys, if you know that there is one specific spot on the mecha that is reflecting your attacks, STOP ATTACKING THAT SPOT! It’s not that hard! There’s a giant set of double doors on the front of the Wobbuffet mech that they all keep attacking and they’re too blind to see that’s where the reflection is occurring.
AND, just like in Psychic Sidekicks, this mecha also has a very obvious weakness….
Brock: “I hate to say it, but that thing may be unstoppable”
Unplug. The. Mech.
The fact that Team Rocket even decided to power the mech this way is stupid. They’ve made so many mechs that are internally powered. They only seem to need stupid external power sources when they can’t come up with a creative way to take down the mech. Hell, you don’t even need to unplug it. Just run so far away that they run out of cord.
*cord runs out as they try to mecha punch them*
Yeah, like that.
- Oh my god, you’re kidding me. The power plant literally has a giant electrical socket on the side of it that Team Rocket is plugged into. This whole…friggin’….stupid...story….so stupid.
- Oh gee, the one person who decided to have brains and attack the power cord was Gary. What a surprise.
- So why does this Nurse Joy/Pokemon center not have a backup generator or a team of Pikachu/other Electric Pokemon on standby to power the center in times of a blackout? They have backup power for lights and stuff but not medical equipment? Come on.
- Are you kidding me? They went to the trouble of sucking all of the power from the city and the power plant to fuel this mech and all along it could be manually powered by James and Meowth pedaling? Rgghghhhghhgsostupidrghghg. Why didn’t they just do that to start with? They probably would’ve been able to win before Gary came around, and they’ve powered stuff with a bike system many times before. One of the main examples being spending years powering their Magikarp sub that way.
- Though I guess Meowth and James just don’t have as much stamina anymore. You’d think with all the walking and mech-powering their legs do that they’d have killer leg strength and stamina. Then again, their first intentions at the start of the episode was stealing food from the Pokemon Center, which they didn’t do. Then again again, they’re saying they’re too tired, not too hungry.
- The mech’s out of power….better use Pikachu…..:|
- And they win because of a stupid flaw in the mech’s design. Remember the doors I mentioned? When one of them attacks, the doors open and the attack enters the mech. The doors close for absolutely no reason, then they reopen when the attack is sent back. Counter works instantly so there’s no reason why the doors should close after the initial attack.
I can justify the doors as a whole because it allows them to protect their mechanism from sneak attacks (that never happen) but the doors closing after the attack just seems like a feature put in to make Ash’s plan work. (He uses Flamethrower with Cyndaquil and when the attack is inside the mech with the doors closed, he pins the doors shut with Chikorita’s Vine Whip and traps the super powered Flamethrower within the mech.)
- Ash: *trying to open a locked door to a storage room for the water gate* “Cyndaquil, use Tackle attack!” Yes, Cyndaquil. Hurt yourself by Tackling the door to open it instead of walking 500 feet back to the Power Plant guys and asking for a
key
.
- Ash, did you seriously look on the desk and shelves before walking a foot to the obvious bright red lever hanging on the wall in front of you?
- Is it really necessary to chain up the lever to the wall? Especially with such a thick chain. It’s a lever for a water gate not the crown jewels.
- Well, of course it does. How else can Ash show Gary how much he’s grown as a trainer since the last time they saw each other? Using Cyndaquil to heat the chains with Flamethrower, Totodile to quickly cool them with Water Gun then Chikorita to slice open the weakened chains with Razor Leaf. It’s a smart thing to do.
Did I say smart? I mean,
holy sh
it, walk back to the Power Plant guys and get a goddamn key instead of continuing to destroy their property, you moron!
What is Ash’s purpose there anyway? Gary was already there, and he could’ve easily found and obtained the lever without damaging their stuff. Ash could be down at the Pokemon Center with Pikachu powering medical equipment and
saving lives
instead of following Gary just to make some stupid point he doesn’t even realize he’s making.
Please don’t argue that Pikachu wouldn’t be powerful enough to do that. If one Thunderbolt is strong enough to power that ridiculously power sucking Wobbuffet mech, surely it can power a few medical devices for an hour or two.
Want extra proof that he’s powerful enough? Well, the plan the Power Plant guys and the others are using is basically plan B. Since getting the main generator up and running would take a very long time due to Team Rocket’s interference, they have to power an old secondary generator with the water flow from the dam they just opened with the water gate. However, since the generator is so old and hasn’t been used in ages, it’s just not putting out sufficient power.
The solution? One good strong jolt to the system, for some reason. Even though I’d figure forcing power into such an old and weak machine would short it out or otherwise damage it, and there’s no reason one jolt would rectify the problem of the generator not being able to, well, generate power.
And, of course, it’s Messiahchu to the rescue. One good long jolt is enough to return proper power flow to the entire city.
- Why is Ash surprised that Gary is helping them move the winch? He went up there to do exactly that. Also, why is Gary Ash-ing out on me in regards to him using any other Pokemon? He has Nidoking, Arcanine, Nidoqueen, Blastoise and probably many other very strong Pokemon who could easily move that winch with a pinky, yet the only one of his Pokemon who is helping is Umbreon.
Hey, speaking of Pokemon who could be helping now; Brock – Onix and Geodude.
- I do like that Ash swallowed some of his pride and actually praised Gary for choosing to help out, even saying he couldn’t have done it without him. And I like that Gary also praised Ash for improving in his skills as a trainer and respectfully said he may even be the one to challenge him next time they meet…...Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuutttttttttttttttttt…..
=============================
Buuuuuuuuuttttttttttt, this episode is still ass. Gary is involved, but he’s more like one of those passive CotDs than he is a semi-main character making a cameo. His only moment of real note is the battle at the start, and he and Umbreon were indeed impressive, but that’s not much. Sure, he also unplugged the mecha Wobbuffet, but, dammit, I refuse to say unplugging something is worth note.
The only Pokemon of Gary’s that we see is Umbreon and while Umbreon is cool, if not somewhat overrated, it’s still not technically ‘new’ since it’s just his old Eevee evolved. We also see some more of his awesome skills, knowledge and maturity as a trainer. It should be noted that not only is Gary not traveling with the bimbos anymore, he’s also not making fun of Ash at every turn like he used to. The Pokemon League loss and his journeys seem to have taught him a lot.
Sure, he refused to battle Ash on the grounds that he assumed nothing new would be shown and no challenge would be given, but he’s not calling him ‘Ashy boy’ or mocking him all the time. He didn’t even turn him down in an insulting manner. He’s mostly quiet and focusing on the tasks before him. I really like that, yet the fact that I like that is just another reminder that we could be watching someone actually skilled and more likable now not just grow as a trainer, but also a person.
Instead we get
told
that Ash is growing a lot as a trainer, even though they show right at the start that it’s not really true. You could say that it’s what we see after that is meant to be the proof, which does seem to be the case, but holy hell they chose a stupid way of doing it. Nearly every way they had Ash be ‘impressive’ was because of something stupid done for plot convenience or was stupid period.
Let’s go down the line. Ash battling the mecha Wobbuffet. He never figured to not aim for the damn doors nor did he think to just unplug the damn thing. He was saved by a fluke (cord was too short for the punch to reach) and Gary saved his ass at the end by unplugging it.
Ash vs. Mech Wobbuffet Part Deux – Facing a powerless mech, and having so much of an advantage it’s ridiculous, Ash does the intelligent thing and loads the mech up with electricity courtesy of Pikachu. Smart.
I will give Ash props for coming up with the good idea of putting a Flamethrower in the mech and then trapping it in the mech with Vine Whips blocking the doors. However, the only reason it’s smart is because of a dumb unnecessary design flaw seemingly made for plot convenience. Plus, Gary wasn’t present for this.
Ash chooses to follow Gary to the water gate instead of going back to the Pokemon Center and powering the medical equipment. Hell, leaving the Pokemon Center at all was dumb. He could’ve at least left Pikachu there to power the place.
Gary has to be uncharacteristically dumb in order for Ash to be effective at the lever part. Gary has been at the water gate much longer than Ash and the others yet his only progress has been finding the winch and realizing the lever is gone. Instead of going to the store room directly behind him, I guess Gary has just been looking in the bushes for the lever. Ash takes over, because why not, and instead of going to get a key for the door from the Power Plant guys, he harms his Cyndaquil by making him Tackle the door and break it down. Sure he’s not horribly wounded or anything, but it still obviously hurt him.
Next, Gary makes his grand contribution in making Umbreon into a lamp to light the room and help Ash see. Good job.
Seeing the thick chain on the lever, that is necessary because reasons, Ash uses fire, water and Razor Leaf to destroy the chain that is not his instead of, again, getting a damn key.
He helps move the winch with Misty, Brock, Gary and the Pokemon that are out. No real notes here, but it doesn’t show that he’s a better trainer at all.
Ash uses Pikachu to power the generator. Not much of note here either, but it doesn’t show his training prowess at all – he just puts a device on Pikachu’s head and tells him to use his electricity. Plus the whole ‘he should be powering the Pokemon center’ thing. If Pikachu were at the Pokemon Center, there’d be no rush and they wouldn’t need the plan B.
I will give Ash his props for being respectful of Gary in the end, but that doesn’t amount to much. Plus, I wasn’t kidding with that ‘he will learn nothing’ joke. He shows that he hasn’t grown much as a trainer from the start by impulsively jumping off a cliff to challenge Gary in the valley, demanding a match, then when he’s turned down he immaturely lets out all of his Pokemon to brag about how good he’s doing (even if, outside of the shiny Pokemon, his lineup’s not impressive) only to show that his Pokemon really aren’t technically trained well at all. Then he stews in anger all day, pinpointing rage at Gary, who did nothing to him, overeating as a training method. Then he drops his resolve to get a new training program because Gary praised him for how well he’s been progressing. Urhghgh.
This episode had so many opportunities to have Ash grow, to show how well Gary’s grown, to have a great match between these supposed rivals, to have Team Rocket execute a decent plan, but we’re denied nearly everything for a big pile of stupid poo.
I have no clue when we’ll see Gary again. I can only hope it’s before the Silver Conference because that would be insanely depressing.
Next episode, one I feel I should remember but don’t, Ledian’s debut.

Newest Finding Bigfoot promo:
Some random lady: "I called my husband and said "You won't believe this, but I just saw a bigfoot!" and he said "No way" and I said "Yes way!"" *that is the entire promo*
So uh, Animal Planet, just thought I'd let you know that this show is still being aired on your channel. Just in case you forgot to cancel it or pull it from the air or something.

Technically yes, but that was big mess.
Warning: Ramblebamblebluh.
Animal Planet made two mermaid "documentaries" with the second being the sequel to the first. The facts were all made up, the footage was digitally manipulated and all of the scientists that they used for testimonials were actors. They put brief disclaimers at the end of each "documentary" stating that "certain events in (this) film are fictional, Navy sonar tests have been directly implicated in whale beachings." And that's it. It never outright stated it was a mockumentary, it just flashed a 'some things in this movie were fake' message. The problem was they not only failed to put proper messages about the film's false nature at the forefront, they advertised them as real documentaries, and they even did a stunt where they pretended a tie-in website containing information on the documentary was seized by the government.
Lots of people, especially officials in marine biology, were pissed that they did such a thing (and to be honest, a mockumentary should be funny, not just fake facts presented as a real documentary. I understand that non-comedic mocumentaries exist, but I find no point in them. You're basically spending an hour and half watching someone lie to you with no jokes attached. You come out not being entertained or educated.), not just because of spreading false information as fact, but also because practices such as this tend to take funding and interest in the sea away from real things that actually require attention. They were particularly pissed that Animal Planet kept mocking and dropping the names of real organizations, and completely dismissed the 'aquatic ape' theory, despite being one of the only legitimate and lasting theories this whole topic has to stand on. So many people were tricked by Animal Planet that the government, specifically NOAA, issued an official statement after the film aired that explicitly stated that no evidence of mermaids has ever been found.
You have to keep in mind that that Animal Planet just suddenly decided to skew from their long tradition of nothing but factual, educational programs at this point since Finding Bigfoot started airing merely a year prior to this. It was a whiplash to their entire audience. It's not like you can't make a real, factual documentary on mermaids, just analyzing the mythos and what people have put forth as actual evidence. They never outright yelled 'Gotcha!' or aired them on April Fools Day or anything. They only made a press release saying "the film is science fiction, using science as a springboard into imagination."
That doesn't even make sense considering almost all of the 'science' was fake. They basically got it backwards; they used imagination as a springboard for fake science. And, again, there's little entertainment to be wrung from something that is full or nothing but lies presented in a completely serious format. The only thing that was funny was the cheap as hell CGI. Even the TV guide and on-demand descriptions listed it as a factual documentary. So, in essence, they were taking the pi
ss out of people who might believe such a thing or at least be interested in it and taking advantage of people who would watch purely for curiosity on how stupid it is. Both of which worked because apparently it was the most watched Animal Planet feature since the Steve Irwin Memorial Special.
It's a shame because, like some of the reviewers on IMDB stated, sure this might be a big 'haha, you're stupid for watching this and believing it's real' moment on adults, but Animal Planet has a huge kid audience who watch Animal Planet to learn to about animals. It's like presenting a 'factual documentary' on Santa then hearing everyone laugh about how fake it all was the next day.
Being fair, and as a matching disclaimer, I never watched either film. I saw the trailers several times and a few clips on Youtube, but brushed it off as completely stupid BS. The cheap CGI did not help, but I thought that was just for the trailers as a visual aid, not something they'd pass off in the movie. I just really got into reading about it once it aired because so many people were pissed/confused/going haha I knew it was fake etc.
....And now that you brought that up, the fact that Finding Bigfoot is still on the air makes perfect sense. It's Animal Planet doing the exact same thing, just in series form and with bigfoot instead of mermaids. I can totally see people watching it just to make fun of it, and people watching because they actually believe in it.
Or I could Wiki it.
"While the Finding Bigfoot team have not yet captured photographic evidence of the creature's existence, the show continues production because it has high ratings and is a top earner for Animal Planet." It always comes to money.
Isn't that right main person on Finding Bigfoot, Matt MONEYMAKER?
(Not lying. That's his real name.)
"Animal Planet has received criticism for Finding Bigfoot and Mermaids: The Body Found for their "outlandishness", however, Fay is quick to defend Finding Bigfoot, and to draw a line between the two programs. "You can't equate bigfoot with mermaids." Yeah, you can't make ANY comparisons to bigfoot and mermaids. Afterall, they're both humanoid creatures with centuries-long mythos, vast amounts 'evidence' and 'sightings' but nothing anyone can make any sort of scientific conclusions from, many people believing in their existence to this day and plenty of people trying to prove they exist even if there's more evidence that they don't.
"Bigfoot enthusiasts have often ridiculed the show, referring to it as "Not Finding Bigfoot", due to the teams consistent lack of success, and the fact that any footage of a Bigfoot would be reported long before an episode airs." Lol, even bigfoot enthusiasts find this show to be stupid.
"Regardless, Finding Bigfoot is one of Animal Planet's top rated programs."
Alright, end on a sad note then. See if I care.
tl;dr: Yes, they did make a mermaid mockumentary.

Mm, yes.
Also, I was just going to write a few sentences on what I remembered from looking that stuff up back then, but then I decided to check the wiki for more info, stumbled onto related things and ended up writing paragraphs. I keep getting told that I write more than I need to, and I can't help falling down that rabbit hole. X_X I even get in trouble in college for that. I really try not to ramble, but I can't stop myself sometimes. It's especially annoying when, in hindsight, the bulk of the post can be condensed easily. "Animal planet made a mockumentary on mermaids, advertised it like a real documentary, people were pissed, and others were so stupid that the government had to step in. The end."

174: Mountain Time – I like Ledian, I feel like I should remember this episode but I don’t really, so let’s get started.
- Why is Ash so excited about seeing where a Ledian is going? Just for some real-world comparison; imagine if a friend of yours ran off excitedly to follow a ladybug. Wouldn’t you think something is wrong with him?
- Pbbt, the CotD is named Benji? Pbbbttthahahahahah….Sorry, I grew up in the 90’s. I can’t associate the name Benji with anything but small dogs and campy movies.
- Benji’s voi—pbbbttt….Benji….he’s named Benji…..pbbbbttt….why do I find this so funny?! Anyway, Benji’s voice actor sounds really bored.
- Brock: “No way! No way we can make it over those rocks, Ash. They can shift and fall at any second.” Oh please. Just climb on the ones that are clearly painted into the background and avoid the noticeably brighter rocks that are obviously animated and you’ll be fine.
- Uh, guys. Benji cleared the rope ladder as strong enough for one person. Why try to tempt fate and climb all at once after him?
- Also, I guess Benji did a crappy job of clearing the ladder for safety if one gust of wind was enough to rip every piece of equipment from the ladder and send Ash and Co. flying off the cliff.
- Ya know, I’m not an expert on Pokemon, but….aren’t there….many better choices for a Pokemon Mountain Patrol Officer to have as their partner than a ladybug? I know this Ledian is tough and trains to withstand strong winds, but it’s still a ladybug Pokemon. Surely there are way better Pokemon, including Flying types, to use in these types of dangerous situations. Plus, who thinks of ladybugs when they think of bare stone mountains? They’re usually in forests.
Case and Point, Ash’s Noctowl, a cool but still far from the strongest Flying type in the world, has absolutely no trouble combating the fierce winds to help Ledian pull Ash, Misty and Brock up the cliff when it has no training whatsoever in flying in such harsh conditions. They make a point after the fact to show that Noctowl got more exhausted than Ledian after everyone was safe, but it’s like they tacked that on to make Ledian seem more impressive.
- You’re going to drudge up bad memories about ranting about the St. Anne episodes? Fine. Togepi weighs 3.3lbs. It’s really the tipping point in weight on this rock see-saw?
- Oh look, Deusexmachina-pi is waving its arms. Wonder what will happen. Hope it’s not another explosion….
Oh….it’s not….they went from tipping the rock over and falling to their deaths to….being balanced on the rock again….What….the….hell? Is Togepi a Time Lord? I had to actually look at the Wiki page to see what move Togepi used there and it says it was a Teleport. ….A….TELEPORT?….No. No. No. No.
I can believe Togepi used Teleport, but that it also teleported the big rock AND put it right back on that spike, balanced it perfectly then teleported Team Rocket, itself and Pikachu right back on the rock in a perfect place of balance? Uh huh, sure you did.
Also, why would Togepi consciously do such a thing? Why not Teleport to...oh I dunno, SOLID GROUND? I know it’s a baby bu—you know what? No. Togepi has been around way too long at this point to keep using the baby card. Plenty of other baby Pokemon go much shorter lengths of time without still acting this oblivious and young.
Togepi is just such a non-being that is only used for bonus cute points and doing Metronome once every 15 episodes.
- They….really believe….all of that….was a dream? I know Team Rocket’s a bunch of morons, but it just seems like they’re explaining away an unnecessary deus ex machina with a throwaway line to never bring it up again, making this whole scene-
- Misty: *after Team Rocket tries to steal Pikachu and Togepi again* “After we just saved you!?”
Benji and Ledian saved them, Misty. None of the rest of you did anything. Well, okay, Ash tried to reach them with Bulbasaur but failed.
- Ash: *to Benji* “If it wasn’t for you, we wouldn’t have Pikachu and Togepi.” If it wasn’t for Benji’s Dad you wouldn’t have Pikachu and Togepi. If he didn’t show up when he did, you’d still be coughing up Weezing’s Smokescreen and Team Rocket would be long gone.
All in all, this episode is milk toast at best, boring at worst. No wonder I don’t remember a damn thing about it. Benji’s bland, Ledian is not made to be interesting outside of its ability to glow in reaction to stars, and even that’s not that pretty considering it just looks like they slowly replace the black with a brighter red color, and while I will say Benji is nice enough and Ledian is brave, there’s no character development to be had here. Benji doesn’t overcome some character flaw or problem, neither does Ledian.
I guess they show that they can handle some rescue situations on their own...but kinda not. Ash had to use Noctowl to help Ledian pull the ladder up and Benji’s dad had to help him escape from Team Rocket’s smoke. Benji is a good mountain patrol officer, but he’s just doing what he’s trained to do, same with Ledian.
Usually in these situations where the CotD isn’t interesting and doesn’t grow, they at least have some sort of doesn’t-matter-ever character development with Ash, but he doesn’t change at all either.
Don’t even get me started on the stupid Togepi scene, but speaking somewhat of that, guess what our final shot of the episode is? Team Rocket, after being blasted off, is trapped on an identical rock that is balancing on an identical rock spike.
Are you fu
cking kidding me? The first time this happened, it was a ridiculous and unrealistic fluke, but I let it go for the most part because I won’t demand pure realism out of Pokemon of all things. If I did, I’d never finish any Pokemon review – it’d be too long.
The second time I called bullshit just because of Togepi’s insanely precise Teleporting abilities. But fine, whatever.
This time doesn’t even begin to make sense by any stretch of the imagination. For anyone saying they’re on the same rock formation, they’re not. That rock fell over and crashed into the ground. They also got blasted off miles away, so they should be no where near that rock. You’re seriously telling me there was another perfectly balanced slab of rock on top of a huge rock spike in this same mountain range and Team Rocket somehow managed to not only land on it but land on it in such a way that didn’t knock it over? Kiss my ass.
Next episode is full of Wobbuffets. I don’t remember it, it doesn’t debut any new Johto Pokemon and I probably won’t care.
