Title: BEAT GAMES NOT WOMEN
Post by: CM on November 07, 2009, 09:59:06 pm
Here, for my reference and your perusal, is a list of every game I can remember beating. As I am curious (or willing to fake it) to know what games you have beaten, I encourage you to make a similar list and start up some contrived conversation.

In no particular order:
1. Final Fantasy I (NES)
2. Final Fantasy I: Dawn of Souls (GBA) ... The total mechanical overhaul makes it fair to consider this separately from the NES version
3. Final Fantasy V Advance (GBA)
4. Final Fantasy VI (SNES)
5. Final Fantasy VII (PS1)
6. Final Fantasy IX (PS1)
7. Final Fantasy X (PS2)
8. Final Fantasy XII (PS2) ... how many hours of my life have i wasted playing silly fantasy games
9. Final Fantasy Tactics (PS1)
10. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (GBA) ... Arguably my all-time favorite game s:
11. Final Fantasy Tactics A2 (DS)
12. Final Fantasy Adventure (GB) ... Brilliant.
13. Final Fantasy Legend III (GB)
14. Secret of Mana (SNES)
15. Secret of Evermore (SNES)
16. Legend of Mana (PSX)
17. Threads of Fate (PSX)
18. Breath of Fire (GBA)
19. Sword of Mana (GBA)
20. Shining Soul II (GBA)
21. Golden Sun (GBA)
22. Golden Sun: The Lost Age (GBA) ... Eagerly anticipating GS3!
23. Black Sigil: Blade of the Exiled (DS) ... woo
24. Chrono Trigger (SNES)
25. Ys III: Wanderers from Ys (SNES) ... Excellent soundtrack.
26. Lufia and the Fortress of Doom (SNES) ... <3
27. Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals (SNES) ... <3
28. Super Mario RPG (SNES)
29. Paper Mario (N64)
30. Super Mario World (SNES)
31. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (SNES)
32. Super Mario 64 (N64) ... Anyone wanna go through this with me sometime? :V

35. Super Mario Land (GB)
36. Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins (GB)
37. Tales of Symphonia (GCN)
38. Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean (GCN) ... The other contender for favorite game : D
39. Super Mario Bros. 3 (SNES) ... That would be the Super Mario All-Stars version
40. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES) ... obviously the best Zelda game
41. The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (GB)
42. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)
43. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (GCN)
44. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Wii)

75. Custom Robo (GCN)

That's probably most of 'em. There's probably a couple more, I'll add 'em if I remember what they are. :V

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (Xbox)
dahhhh I can't get past the plane missions. ˇ _ˇ
The remote control ones with Zero didn't give me much trouble, but for some reason flying an actual plane with any degree of precision is impossible. ~ _~
Also, I still really need to play Dark Cloud 2, but the game is just so daunting, I feel like playing it to completion would be a huge commitment. Maybe during winter break.

And thanks for reminding me:
76. Pokémon Fire Red/Leaf Green (GBA)

Post by: unit880 on November 08, 2009, 12:11:34 pm
God, I absolutely HATED the remote control planes. I managed to beat them after about 45 minutes, but god they were frustrating.

Also, Dark Cloud 2 is a fairly long game, in my opinion. But it's well worth playing.

I really need to pick up on my Harvest Moon: AWL.

Ys: Ark of Napishtim
oh cool
I wanna play this 'cause one of the voice actresses is a friend of the family.
How's the music? Ys III had an amazing soundtrack, and I'm eager to know if the rest of the series measures up.

Also,

My list is supposed to be much longer, but most of the PSX games I've played are in Japanese and I don't know their names.

80. Dark Cloud 2 (PS2)

Great concepts. Terrible dialogue. Tedious as the dickens.

Title: Re: BEAT GAMES NOT WOMEN
Post by: unit880 on January 23, 2010, 06:37:46 pm
Yeah. If only the dialogue were better, it'd be the perfect game.

Okay, let's see here, I beat some more.

Half-Life 2 (Already beat it, but now I beat the PC version.)
Half-Life 2: Episode One (PC)
Half-Life 2: Episode Two (PC)
Portal (PC) <-- Took me like, two hours at most maybe? Dunno why they consider it a puzzle game. It's way too easy.
Professor Layton and the Curious Village (DS) <-- One of the most epic games ever. Also by Level-5, like DC2. Same composer, too, Tomohito Nishiura. Best composer ever, in my opinion.

So that puts me around...52 games beaten. Damn, gotta catch up.

Title: Re: BEAT GAMES NOT WOMEN
Post by: Weirdo on January 23, 2010, 06:55:35 pm
Yeah I found portal too easy too, the puzzles get repetitive despite their attempts to vary them, it just gets tedious, its still technically a puzzle, just a REALLY simple one.

I've played Proffessor Layton for only an hour, but it was awesome, loved it, some of the puzzles are quite hard though, but naturally that makes it better, it has a nice balance between easy and hard.

Title: Re: BEAT GAMES NOT WOMEN
Post by: Chey on January 23, 2010, 08:24:43 pm
Man, I feel so crappy, everyone else has great big lists and I have like a handful of games lol.

These are the games I've completed:
Pokemon Red
Pokemon Yellow
Pokemon Silver
Pokemon Crystal
Pokemon Fire Red
Pokemon Emerald
Pokemon Sapphire
Pokemon Platinum
Pokemon Diamond
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Blue
Final Fantasy XII (strictly speaking I haven't finished the entire game yet, as in one of my save files I'm up to the final boss but chose not to go there until I've finished all the hunts and stuff. Then I restarted because I wanted the Zodiac Spear and the Genji Gloves. But otherwise the storyline is finished)
Bust A Move 3
Bust A Move 4
Guardian's Crusade
Crash Bandicoot 2
Crash Bandicoot 3
Spyro The Dragon
Spyro 2: Gateway to Glimmer
Spyro 3: Whatever it's called
Spyro: A Heroes Tail
Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly
The Legend of Spyro trilogy (I forget the individual names of the games)
Super Mario Bros 3
Mario: The Golden Coins
Super Mario Bros Wii
Mario Kart
Halo 2
Smackdown vs Raw 2006
Smackdown vs Raw 2007
Smackdown vs Raw 2008
Smackdown vs Raw 2009 (except Triple H's story mode)
Smackdown vs Raw 2010 (Randy's and Mickie's story modes, but hey I finished something on them lol)
WWE Crush Hour
Yu Gi Oh on GBA
Dragon Ball Z on GBA

I know there's more because I remember beating more games from my youth, but they've slipped my mind. I might have passed Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2, but then again that might have been my dad and I just thought it was me. This year though I want to go through and beat as many games as possible. I have a fair few but for some reason I never end up finishing any of them. I'll update this list if I remember any more or if I complete any more.

I've played Proffessor Layton for only an hour, but it was awesome, loved it, some of the puzzles are quite hard though, but naturally that makes it better, it has a nice balance between easy and hard.

There are only about 4 problems I consider hard. The rest are easy, or moderately easy. I can usually solve them in two to five minutes. About the last 10 puzzles or so get a little more time-consuming (Up to about 15-20 minutes for me.) but nothing other than that. They just make you stop and think because each puzzle has little bits that each need to be solved and it's not just one answer. I can tell you the puzzles I did within my first hour of play weren't enough to be considered hard, in my opinion.

Title: Re: BEAT GAMES NOT WOMEN
Post by: Weirdo on January 24, 2010, 08:48:07 am
When I played it I started about half way through, plus I was being impatient, I found about a 1/4 easy, 1/2 moderately easy and the rest I gave up on.

Title: Re: BEAT GAMES NOT WOMEN
Post by: unit880 on January 24, 2010, 03:53:00 pm
Oh, okay. Well, that explains a bit. But I still don't see how only 1/4 are easy. I'm not trying to insult your intelligence or be a complete jerk or anything, just saying how it was for me.

No offense taken.

I dunno why only 1/4, maybe cos I was rushing it, I was trying to play the game as much as possible cos I was in a store, so I tried to get as many puzzles done as possible, so I didn't spend too much time thinking things out, never more than 5-6 minutes

Ever since I was little (At least up to my Gameboy years) I've kept/collected every game-box of every game I've bought/owned. That's how I was able to remember. But I don't have ALL the game boxes to every game I've had, just a good portion of them.

http://s84.photobucket.com/albums/k34/Meteordragon01/?action=view&current=VGStuff.jpg

I don't have my PSP game cases up there or my newest DS/Wii game cases though since this picture is a few months old.
(PSP: Final Fantasy 1, Final Fantasy 2, Riviera: The Promised Land, Tales Of the World: Radiant Mythology. DS: Kirby Superstar Ultra. Wii: Muramasa: The Demon Blade)

Behind the first row is a second row of GBC/GBA/GB boxes.

Also, just fully completed Kirby Superstar Ultra (C).

I'm getting close to fully completing my first ever game. KH2. All I have left is one mission (get 15000 points in Hades Paradox cup) and one gummi ship mission (The third one in dreadnought level). Annoying thing in the gummi level is I can get an S+2, but I can't kill the Hunter-X, I always get him to the very last bit when he starts attacking you with everything and then I die. :(

Oh well wish me luck.

also OH MY GOD KRATOS YOU ARE PLAYING LUFIA 2 let me stroke you tenderly
Lol o-o I actually haven't play Lufia 1 yet, gonna do that next after I beat Lufia 2 (dangerously close to doing so I think.)

Anyway,

Adding New Super Mario Bros Wii (C) this time. 100% this with five sparkling stars in profile.
Edit (8/4/10) : Adding Lufia 2: Rise Of the Sinistrals (B) Since I have to beat it again in Retry Mode and try Gift Mode, can't put a (C) on this yet .-.

88. Lufia: Curse of the Sinistrals (DS)

exceeded all expectations (which were admittedly quite low). fun gameplay in spite of lousy pacing and a messed up difficulty curve. they took some liberties with the story and characters (the new character designs were pretty sweet ftr) but overall it was truer to the original than i had anticipated, still made me nostalgia out the ass. puzzles were just as good as (better than???) ever, selan is a babe and dekar is a champ

95. Super Castlevania IV (SNES)

this is by far the brightest, most colorful castlevania i have played
and they ditched the coolest aspect from cv3 (i.e., character switching)

rather forgiving game with kind of an odd difficulty curve, overall probably a little too easy. something about my victory over dracula and his minions seems a little cheap and undeserved

final boss was a lot of fun, though
and i really enjoyed the abundance of stand-up bass in the soundtrack

can you dig it

Well those support spells are pretty useful, there is nothing like setting up a Reflect and Protect and watch a boss either hit me for pitifully physical damage or kill itself with its own magic. Also they get both Aero and Aeroga in that game along with Holy so I could actually hurt things.

===========================================

FINAL NOTES
~I never beat Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories because I lost it while on the last world, then when I got a new copy of it, I lost that one. On the last world again, ironically.
~I can't actually remember whether or not I played Megaman Battle Network 5: Team Colonel, but it feels really familiar and I'm almost positive I did, but not 100%.
~I know I played Sonic Advance 2 and Sonic Advance 3, so I'm assuming I played Sonic Advance since I doubt I started playing on the 2nd game and I remember enjoying these games so I'm kind of sure I played this one too...
~The day after I got Yu-Gi-Oh! Reshef of Destruction my gameboy SP and it with it were stolen.
~The World Ends With You is my absolute favorite DS game and one of my all time favorites.
~I'm currently on the very last boss fight of God of War: Chains of Olympus and can beat it easily. I just haven't felt like picking up my PSP lately.
~I rent tons of games for my Xbox 360 and usually I have to return them before I can finish them. Most of the time, I actually have to return them while I'm the last chapter, such was the case with Shadow of the Damned, Borderlands, Battlefield Bad Company 2, and many others.
~I don't care to play the campaigns for CoD 4 or CoD: Black Ops, but I've played the multiplayer enough to consider them beaten since that's what I bought them for.
~I'm only counting the legitimate games for iPod. 7 Little Words is a bit of a stretch, actually, but it was challenging enough for me to warrant it's place on the list.

Awards:
Number of games played: 220
Number of games beaten: (about) 170
System with most games played: Xbox 360
----Number of games played on it: 59

Favorite Handheld System: Nintendo DS
Favorite Console: PS3 ((only because of Blu-Ray))
Least Favorite Handheld: PSP ((there are almost no good games for it))
Least Favorite Console: Wii ((Lack of 1st party titles and motivation for me to play with Wii controls))

Top 3 Games:
----a) Kingdom Hearts II (PS2)
----b) The World Ends With You (DS)
----c) Bioshock (360)

Worst 3 Games:
----a) Duke Nukem Forever (360)
----b) X-Blades (360)
----c) Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (PS2)

And:
Most looking forward to: Kingdom Hearts 3Ds (3DS)

====================
LASTLY: If any of you have recommendations for games with great stories and gameplay that are easily accessible, I'd love to hear them. Especially for PSP. DS is good too, though I have to get my 3DS fixed still.

PSP has great rpgs! Seek them out at once :) Unfortunatly I lost mine after buying Final Fantasy 1 (I think that's the newest port)

Also, ain't Sly2 a pain? I mean I like the way Sly 1 was linear and all but with S2 I feel less inclined to go for the plat because of the open world-ness of it. Is S3 the same?

then again, they all kind of suck

Heyy bro, how's Catherine? It seems really intriguing from what I've heard but it seems to be getting some pretty great reviews but I'm still hesitant on trying it since I haven't really been gaming much lately.

Really I guess how was it, what was it like and how long did it take to beat the main game?

====================
And on another note! I found my copy of Chain of Memories for GBA in one of my DS cases. Yay! :D

Title: Re: BEAT GAMES NOT WOMEN
Post by: Picard on August 19, 2011, 08:26:05 pm
It's a straight up puzzle game with the classic Shin Megami Tensei Chaos-Neutral-Law alignment options, basically. I think it should be fine for people who haven't been gaming, since it doesn't require you to do any crazy button combination or anything as it's not a fighting game and it doesn't have any quick time events (ew). It's got a mature story that's targeted more towards older men, and I think younger kids probably won't be able to relate much to it. The puzzle games are challenging, IMO, but once you've gotten through it once and figured out how to get through the levels, you can sail through'em pretty quickly. It took me two days to complete the main game.

In other news, I completed AC2 again.

That sounds interesting, maybe when the price drops I'll check it out used so if I beat it really fast or don't like it, I can return it and get my money back.

I'm terrible at returning sh!t. And its 1$ per day. That gets costly as fvck with TV shows.

104. Earthbound (SNES)

had to slog through a few majorly tedious sections, and its famously quirky sense of humor, while it lived up to the hype, wore thin relatively early on. its exquisite charm and pervasive creativity were hard pressed, in my eyes, to compensate for its frustrating and monotonous rpg gameplay. thank god i was playing on an emulator so i could speed the game up at will.

bonus points for being arguably the best balanced rpgs i've ever played (not that that necessarily makes it any more fun) and for nearly making me cry during the ending

Rent them on a weekend/whenever you'll have time to watch them all

A single disc dvd won't usually have that many eps anyways

107. Kingdom Hearts (PS2)

what an odd experience. for maybe the first 75% of the story i could not stand this game. then somewhere around neverland, things started to pick up and before i knew it i was loving it way more than i had any reason to. still trying to figure out why. the story was cheesy, trite and shoddily conceived and executed, the level design was stale, usually tedious and frequently lacking direction, and most of the combat consisted of mindless button mashing and occasionally healing (if my ai-controlled comrades didn't do it for me - though they were surprisingly reliable in doing so). visually and musically the game was quite lovely, but not enough so to redeem its other failings. the game isn't completely without merit, just... not nearly as good as its reputation was suggest. not nearly as good for me to enjoy it as much as i did.

it's funny. when i played legend of dragoon this summer, i absolutely adored the first half of the game, but then it started slipping around disc 3. by the end of the game i was so sick of it (for reasons that, once again, i have trouble explaining) that the whole experience had been soured for me. it's like the incredible first two discs didn't even matter - i felt nevertheless displeased with the game as a whole. now, though, with kingdom hearts, i find myself in the inverse situation: the final chunk of the game was so good -- it wasn't even that good! let's just say -- it was good enough that now, for some strange and likely dumb reason, i look back on the whole game with delight. weird **** indeed. this one's gonna take some thinking.

In all honesty, the reputation for KH comes from all of the other games in the series. The first one is good, as it gets everything going. But in Chain of Memories, the story really takes a turn and starts to shed a new light. Kingdom Hearts 2 took everything that was wrong with the first game, improved upon it, and then added a sh!tton of amazing new features, worlds, plot points, etc. and became an incredible game.

KH2 has been my all-time favorite video game since the day I beat it on release-weekend in 2004. To this day, the only games that have even come close to besting it are Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep which is phenomenal and The World Ends With You, which is even more so than BBS.

Anyways, haha, my point is that the first game is nothing in comparison the rest of them. I'm glad that it left you delighted, because now you're more likely to try out the other games, but, on the other hand, you can't judge the series solely on the first game.

oh zega, i just saw your post now. you'll be happy to know i've started on kh2 (just landed in agrabah for the first time) and am enjoying the game somewhat more than before! after a fresh and promising (if a little slow) start, i was ready to find out what really makes this series great, and i was seeing it for a while, but i've just landed at agrabah and the game has started to fall into old habits. i'm hoping the story picks up soon, 'cause i'm tired from hopping from world to world doing absolutely nothing of consequence!

it's funny, outwardly this game is really, really cool. look at it - a town bathed in perpetual twilight, a shadowy organization of black-robed mystery men with extravagant weapons, over-the-top quicktime feats, newly action-packed interplanetary travel sequences, bosses who always die on the last hit of your outrageously long combos, and even more indecorous cameos of final fantasy's favorite badasses, a darker costume change (and a much needed touch of testosterone) for the hero, the ability to dual wield squaresoft's latest ridiculous sword-but-not-a-sword, and enough amnesiacs to make a soap opera writer cringe... ah, and let's not forget making the main character an incidental skateboard pro. don't get me wrong, i love it all. it all totally works. kingdom hearts 2 is a really cool game - but it bugs me a bit, because it's really obvious how hard they tried to make it that way. it's like between games, the designers had a meeting and one of them said "hey, let's think of everything teenagers find cool, and put it in the sequel. they'll lap that shit up!", and then all the teenagers lapped that shit up. it just seems a bit crass to me. it's kinda hard to take this game completely seriously on account of the relentless pandering...

oh well. that's not really a big deal, kh2 is still a pretty good game, and it's still miles above kh1. i have to give square enix props for making a launching with a continuous, sprawling story that spans multiple titles. you'd think in the rpg world that would be a more common thing but nope!
i'll let you know what i think of it once i reach the end (playing on proud mode, for the record). and if i find com/358/bbs for sale, i'll let you know what i think of them, too.

edit (no seriously i'm editing my post guys!!!) just a heads-up, on kind of a related note, my boyfriend (the same one who talked me into finally playing kingdom hearts) is lending me twewy when he visits in a few weeks, so you can guess what #109 will be. the big question: is it as overrated as kingdom hearts? we'll see!

Ahh, see, Agrabah is always one of the weakest worlds in all of the KH games, imo. Plus, you haven't even gotten close to even half of the game though. Once you get through the Tron world, everything just fvcking explodes and becomes pretty damn epic.

I just always hate on Aladin's world. Though I gotta say the boss fight there is better this time around. Lion King's world is a little ehh and Alantis is just stupid (but it's an optional world). Everything else is incredible. Plus, the second half of the game really takes it to new heights.

Oh and TWEWY is insanely amazing as well.

I'm totally a KH & TWEWY fanboy. haha. The games aren't overrated in the slightest. KH:3D is going to be soo amazing. And Birth By Sleep Volume 2 has me incredibly excited as well.

109. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (Wii)

it was kind of a vexing journey, a lot of tedious filler and pointless "trials" and dungeons that just weren't very exciting. but it was a great adventure nonetheless, the series of final battles were plenty of fun and the ending put a smile on the face. this game's place in the zelda universe along with the recent release of the official zelda timeline has given me a new sort of reverence and awe for this whole mythology (although i feel it could be so much better). musically and perhaps visually my favorite game in the series. the motion controls were for the most part pretty responsive, the only time they really bugged me is fighting those bokoblins with the electric swords. well-implemented, too. having each enemy require certain motions forced you to pay attention to what you're doing in battle without demanding too much precision or busywork - just enough to keep every encounter engaging, although as you grew stronger this became less and less the case.

oh, and the six-armed sextuple-wielding brass buddha-bot is probably the raddest boss in the series.

more oh: also i have acquired twewy

(3DS) Tales of the Abyss 3D (Beaten)
(360) Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (Completed)
(360) Medal Of Honor (Completed)
(3DS) Pokemon Rumble Blast (Beaten)

I'm actually really close to beating several games, but for some reason I keep quitting them right around the end of the game (near the last level). Weird.

I haven't updated my list since its inception. Time to throw some more titles out there. This should be fun to remember. As always, no particular order.

Mass Effect
Mass Effect 2
Mass Effect 3 (Without DLC... Shut up.)
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II
Resident Evil 5
Resident Evil 6 (need to go back and play Sherry/Piers, but otherwise, I'm good)
Warriors Orochi 3
Dynasty Warriors 7
Dynasty Warriors 7: Xtreme Legends
Lightning Warrior Raidy II
Starwish (Kongregate. I count this because it truly is a great game.)
Way of the Samurai 1 through 4 (Don't know why I never listed the first two in the original list. Third was after that, and I'm just missing one ending on the last one.)
Borderlands (last DLC remains, otherwise long since beaten)
Dynasty Warriors 6: Empires
The Walking Dead Episodes 1 through 5
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II - The Sith Lords Vanilla (About to resume working at the patched version. A lot of stuff was left out of the original take because it was rushed for holiday release, and a bunch of modders have restored most/all of it, so I'm playing a second playthrough with it patched.)
Epic Battle Fantasy 3 (Also Kongregate, same reasons, different context.)
Dynasty Warriors 3: Xtreme Legends (Another title I didn't list the first time around)
Grandia

If I remember more, or beat new ones, I'll throw them here. This could be fun to have going again... Especially when I have money to buy more games. >_>

So, I just purchased (well, had bought for me anyway) Fallout 2 via Gog.com. Not bad - it cost $5 which is about Ł3.20 or something like that at current exchange rates.

Anyway, I haven't played the original nor this one ever - unfortunately I wasn't really old enough, and certainly not mature enough, to play them when they were released. So I figured "Why not play them now?" For whatever reason, I'm starting with the second one - mainly due to the fact that it's a) the one on deal and b) the one which would help me with my backgrounds for New Vegas, since the games are only 40 years apart, which isn't a huge amount when you consider the difference between F1 and F2 - about 80 years.

On the games I've recently completed (within last few weeks), I can list the following:
Overlord 1
Bioshock 1
Bioshock Infinite

I can update this with some things I've beaten semi-recently. Read that with a hint of "I don't really remember when exactly - all my days are blurring together into a sopping great mess".

Anyway:

Fallout: New Vegas (Mr. House/ New Vegas Storyline)
Fallout 2 (Generic basic build)
AC:3

On the whole AC3 front... I didn't NEED to beat it, the game was practically over when I picked it back up. "Oh no, I need to recruit the other half of my scrappy recruits to solve mysteries and make the game easier than a railroad shooter with infinite ammo and health". Other than that, I had one semi-difficult (for AC3 standards) Templar to assassinate, some ship battles and the generic town to finish off, which has apparently become a staple of Assassin's Creed. And after that stuff was done, just kill the main character's dad and his second-in-command.

Oh, and the Desmond missions, which are about as thrilling as watching paint dry. It wouldn't have been so bad, but Desmond's supposed training is made completely sodding useless 'cause the stupid muppet won't steal things to make life easier, let alone murder his way through to getting the power MacGuffins. It's ridiculous because, you know, the WORLD IS GONNA END if he doesn't get these power sources to keep the temple working so the mystic shield nonsense still works. And yet he has absolutely no problem murdering the typical workers at Abstergo, who probably don't realise that they work for a bunch of stupid twats who seem to have lost the plot or reasoning for why they want to control the world. And now Ubisoft expect me to buy a new one. Sorry Ubisoft, I was following the story for a conclusion which fell flat, and you flat out admitted your marketing in the multiplayer videos, which amused the living hell out of me as a gamer, before making me slightly more cynically depressed than normal.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On the Fallout-based front, I have to say that the game series took a highly odd direction. I'm not just saying that 'cause I prefer the second game to the other two I've played - I DO, but that's not my point. My point is that a lot of people enjoyed playing things like Fire Emblem when it finally got ported, and the Tactical Squad Turn Based System isn't dead. Case-in-Point: Fire Emblem. Case-in-Point: XCOM: Enemy Unknown.

Incidentally, I'm going to be prowling my local game store for a cheap second-hand copy of XCOM if the new one is too expensive. That, or I'll just use Amazon - I saw a new copy for Ł18, which isn't bad at all. Though this is the console version which is inevitably no doubt worse than the PC edition, but I refuse to shell out Ł30 to get a version which needs to be online to play. Goddamn you Steam, digital downloads are ruining everything... You know, when they stop you from playing without an internet connection, which is half the sodding time when you choose to play single-player games. Or at least where I live.

Back to my point on Fallout. I don't necessarily mind the 1st Person Perspective, but it did make it a little bit too FPS somehow. That, and considering the amount of work Bethesda spent balancing the melee/ ranged/ magic combat system for Oblivion, it was somewhat less chucked away and more napalmed to a crisp with the inclusion of gunplay. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but the melee/ unarmed option is less "handicapping yourself" and more "trying to run the 100M sprint in a cast". Not impossible, but ridiculously tedious with no payoff. It's not even more fun - if you want to play a hack-n-slash in 1st Person... just play Oblivion (or now) Skyrim, they made it work better.

Completed Uncharted 3. It's pretty good, albeit frustrating at some parts.

Title: Re: BEAT GAMES NOT WOMEN
Post by: EHW on December 19, 2013, 02:37:55 pm
Not exactly beaten either of these - due to their status of roguelikes - but I'm adding what I've been playing recently:

1: FTL (Faster-Than-Light)
2: Rogue Legacy

FTL is a spaceship-roguelike, with you playing as a guiding force for an intrepid crew of space frontiersmen, racing to the end of the galaxy in preparation for a grand battle with a massive flagship. You have limited supplies of fuel, special ammunition and robot parts, so you need to be aware of your limitations during your race. And all the while, you are being pursued by the enemy fleet, who want nothing more than to destroy you - the last remnants of the resistance fleet.
Rogue Legacy meanwhile is a more traditional roguelike, but every time you die, you choose one of three new characters to be the "heir" of your last character. Each character inherits the armour and weapon of your family tree, and you gain upgrades over your family tree's lifetime. The enemies level up with you to an extent, and each character is of a certain class and has certain traits such as Near-Sighted, making your camera from further away seem blurry, or being OCD, which allows you to regain a single point of mana every time you destroy part of the scenery.

Well the only thing I've beaten recently is Fire Emblem Sacred Stones again. This time however I managed to do it on the hardest difficulty, only attacking with an Archer, Neimi. I even recorded it and put it up on youtube.

Completed Uncharted: Golden Abyss as well as platinum'd Gravity Rush on the Vita. Great games. Doubt I'll plat Uncharted, despite it being doable and only four trophies left (one collectible trophy, 250 Headshots trophy, Hard mode and Crushing mode trophies), because it means that I have to replay the game 2 more times, and I don't have that kind of patience.

Title: Re: BEAT GAMES NOT WOMEN
Post by: Doru on January 08, 2014, 07:19:49 am
Nice, this is why I think I'm goin to start to play naughty dog games on hard mode so I only have to restart once. I'm trying just to play gravity rush and I'm getting sleepy playing it. Gonna try one more time and see if maybe I was just already sleepy or something.

Title: Re: BEAT GAMES NOT WOMEN
Post by: Picard on January 08, 2014, 07:26:27 am
Gravity Rush has a great gameplay, but its story is kinda confusing and meh-ish. The challenge missions are, well, challenging. Also, have fun looking like an idiot if you're playing it in public. It uses motion sensing to a large degree.

Because the vita looks great under the sun? xD. I'm actually surprised I hadn't run into any motion sensing parts yet, I remember trying this once before and had a hard time with it.

Title: Re: BEAT GAMES NOT WOMEN
Post by: Picard on January 08, 2014, 09:43:46 pm
Actually, it works pretty well under the sun if you max out the brightness, since it's already pretty damn bright by default. I don't really have a problem playing it outside.

Platinumed Walking Dead Season 1 on the Vita. The last chapter was an emotional roller coaster.

What were your choices throughout the season? Did you also get the 400 days dlc?

Title: Re: BEAT GAMES NOT WOMEN
Post by: Picard on January 18, 2014, 10:08:16 pm
I didn't get the 400 Days DLC. I got TWD because it's on discount right now on the PSN, and is discounted further thanks to my PS+ membership. I typically sided with Kenny and tried to be honest to Clementine. I also saved Carly and Ben.

Title: Re: BEAT GAMES NOT WOMEN
Post by: Doru on January 19, 2014, 01:40:25 pm
Oh yeah, it's like $5 huh? I got lone survivor, stealth inc and terraria during the sale. Heh, I guess we had pretty similar playthroughs, I would ask what choice you made at the end but the response is pretty spoilerish to however reads it and hasn't played it. What do you think will happen next in season2? If you want you can mp me a response. :)

Wow, you played TWD exactly the same way I did on my first playthrough. The second time I played, I saved Doug because Doug's awesome. Carley's too stupid to put batteries in a radio.....but she does get a purple vest. I can't wait to get season 2.

Title: Re: BEAT GAMES NOT WOMEN
Post by: Doru on January 20, 2014, 12:01:45 pm
I remember saving Doug the first time so we could both save Carly.... And then she died. Replayed it while waiting for ep 3 so I could have Carly tho'. At least Doug helps you better in ep2 with his little laser pointer.

Man, I'm kinda hoping to see more of Molly too. She had a nice weapon. I keep hearing people suggest Kenny return because his "death" was implied and offscreen.

If Kenny survived that and managed to escape that place without getting any bites or scratches, he needs an action movie made about that because that has to be insanely awesome.

Kenny was an awesome character as a whole so I'd love to see him return. Not holding my breath, but I'd love it.

Title: Re: BEAT GAMES NOT WOMEN
Post by: Picard on January 20, 2014, 09:42:48 pm
I saved Carley since she's got a gun and could potentially save Doug, but TWD's all about the illusion of choice anyway.

Picked up Pokemon Conquest again to keep playing through the extra quests.

Also working on Mario Kart 8 and Borderlands 2.
I'm on the very last level for Super Mario 3D World. After I beat that and collect the stamp and 5 stars in that level I'll have 100% the game.

it's an instant classic. i can't believe how popular it become, and how quickly.................... how was zestiria? my old roommate and i went through tales of graces f together and had a great time, best coop experience of my life, much more manageable multiplayer combat than previous tales games. zestiria has a similar battle system, right? is it as fun? is it the story less garbo than graces?

edit: i bet terak would love undertale. i hope he plays it

Zestiria was OK. Similar-y system and better story than Graces, although the latter's not saying much, I guess.

Alright so played a lot of games since the last post but uh... yeah here are some of my recent ones. Might've said this in the discord already but wth.

- Recently finished and got the platinum for Bloodborne, hell of a game and a long time coming. One of the first PS4 games I got and I finally got it done on the PS5 lol.

- Picked up A Way Out, it always gave me an Uncharted kind of feel and it kinda is just not as responsive. It feels like a PS3-era game and at times looks like it too, wish we had more co-op games like this and Army of Two. Will definitely be picking up the studios next game at some point because of this. Also, Platinum'd this game.

- 5 Dates, had been hearing the game being talked about on Twitter a bit decided to give it a shot as it was on sale and... it's not bad, dunno if I'll play it again for the different endings tho.
